Privacy policy

This policy explains what information Back Then Daily (“we”, “us”) collects when you visit backthendaily.com or read our email, how we use it and the choices you have. If you live in California or another state with its own privacy law, Your privacy choices explains your rights in more detail.

Information you give us

The daily email. When you sign up we collect your first name and email address. If you sign up from a Your Year page, we also keep the birth year you looked up, so we can send you things from your own years.
Messages. When you write to us, we keep your message and your address so we can answer. If you share a memory and allow us to publish it, we use only your first name and your state.

Information collected automatically

Hosting and security. Our site runs on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, to deliver the site and protect it from attacks.
Visitor statistics. We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which doesn’t use cookies and doesn’t track you across sites. We may also use Google Analytics, which uses cookies to tell us how readers find and use the site.
Advertising. Our advertising partners collect information through cookies and similar technologies, described below.
Email. Our emails tell us whether a message was opened and which links were clicked, so we know what readers enjoy.

The Your Year page and our games work in your browser. We don’t store the year you type unless you sign up for the email from that page. The year does appear in the page’s address, which our host and partners can see, as with any page you visit.

Advertising and cookies

We show ads to keep Back Then Daily free. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.

You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings. You can also opt out of other vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info. Our cookie policy lists the kinds of cookies used on this site and how to control them.

Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent before advertising and analytics cookies are used, through a consent tool provided by Google.

How we use information

to send the daily email and answer your messages;
to understand which articles readers find useful, and improve them;
to show ads that pay for the site, and measure them;
to keep the site secure and working;
to comply with the law.

We share information only with the service providers who help us run Back Then Daily:

Cloudflare, which hosts the site and provides our visitor statistics;
Amazon Web Services, whose Simple Email Service delivers our email, sent through Sendy, the email software we run ourselves;
Google, for advertising and, if we use it, Google Analytics.

We don’t sell your name or email address, and we never share them with advertisers. We may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our readers or the site.

How long we keep it

Your name and email stay on our list until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only your email address on a “do not send” list, so you don’t get mail from us again. Messages you send us are kept as long as we need them to answer and follow up. Advertising and analytics partners keep their own data under their own policies.

Security

The site is served only over an encrypted connection, and the information we hold is kept with providers who protect it. No method of storing or sending information is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect yours.

Your choices

Unsubscribe from our email anytime with the link at the bottom of every message.
Control cookies through your browser and the privacy settings described in our cookie policy.
Ask us to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you by writing to hello@backthendaily.com.

Children

Back Then Daily is written for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we’ll delete it.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we’ll say so in the daily email.
